Best Weather Conditions for Exterior Painting

Arizona is well-known for sunny skies and warm temperatures all year round. When it comes to planning out your house painting day, you may think any day or season is desirable. However, we would advise differently. While we don’t typically face extreme cold like other states, there is still plenty to watch out for weather-wise.

Avoid These Types of Days

There are a few conditions that we recommend avoiding when it comes to painting your home’s exterior.

Cold Days

While it doesn’t get cold in Arizona very often, there are days that can dip below ideal painting temperatures. Oil-based paints are usually best applied in temperatures between 40 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit while latex paint is best for days between 50- and 85-degrees Fahrenheit.

If it gets too cold, the paint will take longer to apply which can have lots of unwanted effects. For example, the longer the paint is wet, the more vulnerable it is to collecting dirt, debris, and even bugs. This makes it harder to apply multiple coats and results in blistering or bubbling of the paint.

Hot Days

Hot days are not uncommon in Arizona. But just because the sun is shining does not mean it is a perfect painting day. When it is too warm, paint actually dries too quickly. While this may not seem like a problem, it is. Paint that dries too quickly doesn’t have enough time to bond to the surface.

If your painting professional such as Life in Color Painting chooses to paint on a sunny day, they will make sure temperatures aren’t exceeding 90 degrees. A good practice is to start on the side of the house that is shaded and work your way around as the sun moves throughout the day.

Wet Days

Wet surfaces and wet environments are not productive for good, clean coats of paint. For one, you’ll want to make sure your home is completely dry after being washed and cleaned.  Painting on a wet surface can result in streaks which do not look good on a home.

In addition, avoid any days that are rainy or humid. Paint needs dry time to properly bond to the surface and water affects that. Humidity will also prolong the time it takes your paint to dry. The moisture in the air prevents the moisture in the paint from being absorbed.
